IFDVF 29th Feb - 2nd March 2008. University of Sheffield Student's Union Fabulous workshops on Macedonian music and dance! Come and learn to rock in 7/8 time. See http://www.ivfdf.ceilidhsoc.org/

My thesis was finished just before Christmas 2005, and I graduated in the summer of 2006. Since then I worked as the Sheffield Ethnomusicologist, organising world music workshops in schools. This September I started teaching for Sheffield Music Service, and am now teaching viola, fiddle and occasionally cello in fifteen schools to a fantastic and ever-growing group of students. I'm also teaching a course in music & culture at the University of Sheffield, and giving my annual music & maths lecture at Sheffield Hallam University.

In 2006 we recorded a new album IDI VIDI to be released soon. Recorded with East Handed and singer Vesna Panic, IDI VIDI features twelve tracks of Macedonian traditional songs, with viola solos and bass accompaniment.

In 2005 I recorded DO THE MUSIKING with The Big Eyes Family Players. Two tracks were featured on Radio 3's Mixing It program on Friday 20th May, 2005. I also played on a live CD, GADZOOKS, that was recorded at The Grapes in Trippet Lane, Sheffield, and also released in 2006.

You can order a copy of both CDs from www.earlywinterrecordings.co.uk

DO THE MUSIKING... "There's a beautiful sadness at the core of the music, built around mournful violins and viola, piano, acoustic guitar and slowly unwinding funereal gloom. The new viola player, Lindsay Aitkenhead, is a particularly important addition, bringing even more East European angst to the table."
Martin Lilleker, Sandman magazine, issue 119, May 2006

GADZOOKS!... "is as mysterious as it is enticing, featuring 12 tracks of sparkling, beautiful improvisation. Think Sunburned Hand of the Man. Think Gang Gang Dance. Think the soundtrack to a new Claire Denis movie. Think the Boxhead Ensemble. Think dark washes of viola, detuned guitar, auto harp and melodica. This is the New Weird South Yorkshire!"
James William Hindle 2005

Early Winter Recordings is a new micro-label, based in Sheffield, started by the Big Eyes stable. They will be putting out a series of limited releases, all with hand-made sleeves, and featuring new free-folk / improv / experimental / psychedelic music from all over the place.
